On 12 November Kyiv hosted a conference of the Crimean Tatar Kurultai. It was the first time since returning from Deportation that the gathering was held outside the Crimean peninsula, due to impossibility of performing free gatherings in the Russia-occupied Crimea. Overall, 200 delegates were keen to attend.

When given a word, Mufti of RAMU ”Umma” Said Ismagilov said that Ukrainian Muslims are proud with the strength, courage, valour and strong faith in God, demonstrated by the Crimean Tatars living on the peninsula.

— They are role models in fraternity and endurance in terms of the Russian occupation and repressions against the Crimean Muslims. We always remember them in our prayers. Wishing peace and God’s mercy for all the Muslims in Crimea!

Sheikh Said also noted that hard times demand hard decisions, in particular, those voiced by the Crimean Tatar leader Mustafa Dzhemilev. Among his theses was the demand of expelling the collaborates with the occupational regime from both the Mejlis and the Kurultai; a need to extend the time in office for the current delegates of Kurultai (until general election of the new calling is possible). He also stressed that imams taking money from the occupational authorities even though the regime persecutes the Crimean Tatars and all the Crimean Muslims for their ethnicity and religion, would have to go after the occupation was over, for they had no moral right to continue occupying their posts.

Participants of the Islamic Studies School urge to translate the Book on the First Kurultai into Foreign Languages

On July 2, at the VІІ International Summer School for Islamic Studies "Islam and Social Development" the discussion was about the book "The First Kurultai: From the First Founding Meeting to the National Parliament (1917-1918)". Its author, a well-known Ukrainian scientist, researcher at the Research Institute of Ukrainian Studies under the Ministry of Education of Ukraine, coordinator of the Tavria Humanitarian Platform, Andriy Ivanets, told the audience about the First Kurultai’s activities, stressing that its creation was the avatar of Crimean Tatars’ self-organization during the revolutionary transformations of 1917-1918.

After Andriy Ivanets’ presentation, a discussion took place during which the audience suggested launching the presentation of this research in the western regions of Ukraine, as well as translating the book into foreign languages, in particular, in Polish.

The scientist shared his impressions:

- The audience was attentive; discussion of the topic was substantive, and for many attendees, it was the first acquaintance with the new research. Mariusz Marshevsky, a Polish scientist, suggested translating that into Polish. Activists from the western part of our country propose to launch the book presentation in their region, - says Andriy Ivanets.

The book contains a modern scientific focus on one of the key periods in the centuries-old history of the indigenous people of the Crimea, when they were undergoing a transformation from the state of the ethnic group to the modern ethno nation. The author used a number of previously unpublished sources, in particular the protocols of the Kurultai of December 1917, and also developed the concept of the Crimean Tatar revolution in his book.

Andriy Ivanets is a historian, publicist, public figure. He was a representative of the National Council of Ukraine on Television and Radio Broadcasting in the Autonomous Republic of Crimea, head of the department on temporarily occupied territory under the Administration of the President of Ukraine. He popularizes the history of Crimea and Ukraine in whole. He is the author of the monograph on the Crimean issue in the UNR policy during the Directory period. Scientific interests are as follows: the history of wars and revolutions in the Crimea and Ukraine, ethno-national processes, the problem of territorial integrity restoration of the Ukrainian state.

Looking back, on July 1, the VII International Youth Summer School for Islamic Studies "Islam and Social Development: History and the Present times " began its workshop on the premises of Kyiv Islamic Cultural Center. This School was once again held by the Ukrainian Center for Islamic Studies with the assistance of the Civil Society Union “All-Ukrainian Association "Alraid". Among the participants are historians, philosophers and religious scholars not only from Ukraine but also from other countries of the world, including Poland. Turkey, Moldova; students.

Muftiyat urges to consider more seriously registration of land on mosque and madrasah

The Religious Administration of Muslims of Crimea (RAMC) asks heads of Crimean towns, urban villages and villages, as well as Muslim communities to consider more seriously the decision of the Qurultay of the Crimean Tatar people on the registration of land plots allocated for the construction of a mosque and madrasah on Muftiyat, according to its press service.

“All plots of land in Crimea allocated by city, town and village councils as well as by raion state administrations for the construction of religious buildings (mosques, madrasahs) and ancillary facilities must be registered on the Religious Administration of Muslims of Crimea with the subsequent transfer to the local Muslim communities,” the Muftiyat’s statement notes.

In view of the above, the RAMC requests to take this information with responsibility and henceforth comply with the decision of the Qurultay of the Crimean Tatar people dated December 5-6, 2009.

“To adjust (remake) on the Religious Administration of Muslims of Crimea all decisions previously issued by local self-governing bodies and land development projects on allotment of land plots executed on the local Muslim communities,” reads the document.
It is also noted that land plots allocated for permanent use by the RAMC with built mosques, which are not commissioned yet, are owned by the RAMC.

“Documents of title to these mosques will be registered on the RAMC and then transferred to the books of the local Muslim community,” the RAMC said.

The Crimean Qurultay Takes Measures for Unity of the Muslims in Peninsula

The Majlis of the Crimean Tatar people approved resolution of the Qurultay of Crimean Tatar “Of the tasks of the national self-government bodies for the spiritual unity of the Crimean Tatar people” on 16 January.

The Qurultay charges the Majlis of the Crimean Tatar people with the Religious Administration of Muslims of Crimea (RAMC) to develop and realize the complex of measures aimed to the spiritual and organizational unity guarding of the Muslims of Crimea, making of united system of the Islamic educational institutions and preparation for the imams of mosques. Particularly, it is proposed in the resolution to provide opening of the Crimean Islam University, to start the construction of the Djuma-Djami mosque (the Central mosque) in Aqmescit (Simferopol).

Moreover, the Qurultay charges local majlises to promote the construction of Djuma-Djami mosques and madrasah (higher religious schools) in each of the raions and towns in Crimea and with concession of a status of the main Islamic centers in appropriate raion, town, complex work holding on the identification, inventory manual, renewal and restoration of the objects of materials and spiritual heritage of the Crimean Tatar people.

It should be mentioned the V Qurultay’s II Session was held on 5-6 December 2009 and it was decided to charge the Majlis to work the resolution of spiritual unity out, and to approve it on behalf of the Qurultay.
