Crimean Tatars Asked The UN To Establish A Special Mission To Crimea

The very existence of the Crimean indigenous people is under threat, the Crimean Tatar leaders assured the delegates of UN World Conference on Indigenous Peoples held on September 22-23 in New York.

On their part, Ukrainian authorities also reported flagrant violation of the Crimean Tatars’ rights. Mr.Pavlo Klimkin, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, and the Crimean Tatars people’s leaders accused Russia of aggression and intolerance towards everyone not acknowledging the peninsula’s annexation by Russia, the TSN reports.

The Conference was held under guidance and close attention of UN Secretary General Mr. Ban Ki-moon. Russia protested against giving word to Crimean Tatars and, besides, reported quite the opposite, namely full observation of rights of Crimean Tatars. Mr. Chubarov and Mr.Dzhemilev were indeed given word after the Ukrainian Ambassador in the UN, Mr.Yuri Sergeev, interfered. After that, they spoke about the persecution against Crimea’s indigenous people: about the rummages at homes and educational institutions and the “black lists”.

“THe situation is total terror towards those who disapprove the occupational regime,” — said Mr.Mustafa Dzhemilev, the Crimean Tatar people’s leader.

He indicated the Crimean Tatar Mejlis as the main force on the peninsula standing against Russian occupation. “The life gives more and more challenges and threats to the very existence of the indigenous peoples. The annexation ruins the world legal order,” — Mr.Refat chubarov, Head of Crimean Tatar Mejlis, thinks.

“There’s a threatening situation in Crimea, so we accentuated the importance of establishing a special UN Mission for Crimea. Legal mechanisms have to be found to provide this Mission’s permanent stay on the peninsula,” — he said.

It bears reminding that the new authorities forced the Mejlis out of the private building and arrested their property and accounts.
