A show of the costumes of the Crimean Khanate period has taken placeint the Zyndzhyrly madrasah, Bakhchisarai. Well-known Crimean Tatar fashion designer Elvira Sofu has presented her collection at the conference entitled ‘Islamic text and Arabic graphical tradition’.

According to the designer, she began to work on the collection nine months ago.

“I want to say thanks to the Reserve (the Bakhchisarai Historical and Cultural Reserve – Ed.), because I came to a unique place – a place of power. In itself stay in the Zyndzhyrly madrasah, this unique medieval town, does not leave an artist indifferent, and was the idea to create this collection. When you go there and see these walls, images of that period occur in the mind. It is our royalty, because these buildings were built with such a deep knowledge and deep love for this land that there could not be ignoble people. Therefore, only noble images emerge in the mind,” she said.

The collection features 11 costumes: ten female and one male.

Sketches of models were prepared according to the descriptions and engravings, Ms. Sofu reported.

“My friend gave me fabrics. They are exclusive, imported from Europe, Italy, Spain and France. Manufacturers of these tissues are still working on the medieval tradition… These fabrics are similar to those exhibited here, in the Zyndzhyrly madrasah, burial cloth of Hadzh Giray…,” the fashion designer added.

Elvira Sofu announced plans to add new costumes to the collection, which would make it even wider and more interesting.

“I will fill up the collection and hope there will be more shows. I have already received an offer from the All-Ukrainian Information and Cultural Centre,” she stressed.

It is noteworthy that during the fashion show, models were wearing jewellery by talented Crimean Tatar artist, ceramist and jeweler Izzet Ablaev and his son Enver Ablaev.
