Book ‘Tolerant textbooks – tolerant society’ published in Simferopol

A book titled ‘Tolerant textbooks – tolerant society’ has been published in Simferopol, known Crimean historian Gulnara Bekirova has disclosed at a press conference on September 29.

The authors of the book are Gulnara Bekirova and Coordinator of the Association of Crimean Tatar Historians, Elvedin Chubarov.

The edition contains a study of fragments of intolerant attitude towards ethnic and religious minorities in the context of ethnic and political situation in Ukraine and Crimea in the textbooks for secondary schools.

“The brochure presents the text of research and everything we had put – our conclusions and our recommendations for subject ministries,” G. Bekirova said.

“Financial assistance in publishing of the book was provided by the International Renaissance Foundation under the programme ‘Strengthening the Impact of Civil Society.”

According to the authors, the circulation of the book is 600 copies: 250 copies were issued in Russian, whereas another 350 will soon be published in the Ukrainian language.

“The book is intended for representatives of relevant ministries and agencies, teachers, parents and, indeed, for everyone who is interested. This is a very wide range of people,” she added.

It is planned that this brochure will be send to various Ministries and agencies, including Ministry of Education and Science, Youth and Sports of Crimea, Ministry of Culture of Crimea, the Republican Committee on Interethnic Relations and Formerly Deported Citizens of Crimea, etc.

Elvedin Chubarov, in turn, said that during the study, which is presented in the book, they analyzed 50 existing textbooks on history, Russian literature, Ukrainian literature and ethics. In 35 books were found 170 fragments of intolerant attitudes, mostly against the Crimean Tatars.

“Today’s paradigm of textbooks is Ukrainian-centric. It is presented in terms of the titular nation – the Ukrainians. The history of other 133 nations of Ukraine is reflected by either the position of negative coverage or simply suppressed,” he mentioned.
