In the recent years, in Crimea there is a tendency of increasing of the number of women wearing hijab. However, not all the Crimean Tatars believe that wearing a headscarf corresponds to the traditions and customs of the Crimean Tatar people.

In Islam, hijab is considered to be any women's clothing, which covers the whole body except face and hands. In the modern world under hijab is usually understood a traditional headscarf of a Muslim woman.

A lot of Crimean Tatars believe that wearing the hijab does not correspond to the traditions and customs of the Crimean Tatar people. Is this true? This question is answered to the journalist of QHA by the PhD in political sciences, the assistant professor of Political Sciences of the Tauride National University of V.I. Vernadsky, the director of the Crimean Institute of Peace, the author of the book "Islam in modern Crimea: indicators and problems of revival" Elvira Muratova.

"I believe that there is nothing wrong in wearing hijab. A person, who comprehended the truth of Islam, does it voluntarily. The problem is not in violation by someone of traditions and customs of the Crimean Tatar people, by wearing the hijab, the problem is that there is no alternative. Nowadays, our designers do not offer clothing for the Muslims in the national style, and that is why they have to wear the hijab", - said E. Muratova.

The Crimean historian Ibrahim Abdullayev does not consider the modern Crimean hijab as a return to the traditions. He said that Islam in Crimea has always been more secular, containing some European features. On the peninsula women never covered their faces with the yashmak and always emphasized their femininity.

"Girls covered their heads with a fez, and married women with marams. A dress was girdled with a belt. This belt emphasized harmony of women, and yet was considered as a decoration. But such a garment, like what they were now, which completely hides the female figure, was never in use before", said the historian.
