A solemn event summing up the courses for women on the Quran has been held in the Seit-Settar Mosque (Simferopol) on May 12. The courses were organized by the Office for Religious Affairs of the Turkish Republic in Crimea and the Religious Administration of Muslims of Crimea.

As the Coordinator of the Religious Affairs Office of the Turkish Republic in Crimea, Omer Faruk Can, has reported to QHA, in the 2010/ 2011 academic year, 39 women from 27 to 76 years old have studied the basics of Islam, reading the Quran and the interpretation of surahs. All of them are from different regions of Crimea.

The course attendants were divided into three groups: the first group studied the Arab alphabet and reading some surahs of the Holy Book of Muslims - Quran; the second group included those who already passed the first part of the course, they were taught half of the Qu'ran surahs, as well as deepened their knowledge of the foundations of Islam; students of the third group were taught reading and interpretation of the second half surahs. Thus, in order to learn reading the Quran and gain the knowledge on the basics of Islam, women must train for three years.

Omer Faruk Can noted that the number of students increases every year, and today the first group of students successfully passed the exams.

“The courses are very important for the Crimean Tatars, because women bear their knowledge into their families and instill a love for the Quran to their children. Courses are designed to fill in the knowledge about Islam lost during the Soviet time, when the nation was in the places of exile,” he told, adding that the Religious Affairs Office of the Turkish Republic in Crimea plans to expand the courses and to build a large mosque in the territory of the Seit-Settar Madrasah.

It should be noted that the organization is also conducting accelerated courses to study the Qu'ran for children, pupils and students, which last about two months during summer.

The Office for Religious Affairs of the Turkish Republic is organizing and conducting training courses on the Qu'ran in Crimea since 1993.
