SSU Investigation Team Holds Meetings with Crimean Tatars - Deportation Witnesses

Employees of the investigation team, created by the SSU for carrying out of pre-judicial investigation of all circumstances of the deportation of 1944, hold meetings with the Crimean Tatars - witnesses of the deportation, for the purpose of their interrogation as witnesses. It was declared on December, 5th, in the course of the 2nd session of the Kurultay of the Crimean-Tatar people of V convocation by the vice-president of the Special Commission of the Kurultay on studying of the genocide of the Crimean-Tatar people and overcoming of its consequences, Elvedin Chubarov.

According to E.Chubarov, employees of the SSU who hold such meeting are given corresponding instructions to meet witnesses of the deportation in such a way, and from his part the head of the investigation team asked to inform on complaints to roughness or tactlessness of their employees if there are.

We shall remind that to execute the commission of the President of Ukraine V.Yushchenko from July, 2nd, 2009, the Security Service of Ukraine including the Central Administrative Board of the SSBU in Crimea, are created investigation teams for carrying out of pre-judicial investigation of all circumstances of the crime against the Crimean-Tatars, Armenians, Bulgarians, Greeks and Germans, committed by the Soviet Union in 1944.

On August, 20th, 2009, the group of the members of the Committee led by the first deputy of the chairman of Mejlis Refat Chubarov held a meeting with the management of the Crimean Central Board of the SSU and employees of an investigation team for discussion of questions of possible interaction in business of investigation of the given crime. During this meeting the members of the committee familiarized themselves with the investigation team approaches, and also it was decided that the Mejlis of the Crimean-Tatar people and the Special Commission will help according to their possibilities with corresponding documents and materials, available in their order.

Therefore, the copies of the first arrived 30 statements and attestations of witnesses have already been officially directed by the Chairman of the Mejlis of the Crimean-Tatar people Mustafa Dzhemilev together with the covering letter addressed to the chief of the Crimean Central Board of the SSU of Ukraine Vladimir Pshenichniy.

"These, and also some other groups of documents periodically directed further (statements and certificates) should be attached by the investigation team of the SSU to other materials at carrying out of check of the facts of the criminal acts which were committed by public authorities of the USSR against the Crimean Tatars by nationality, and taking of remedial decisions", the special commission of the Kurultay considers.

Letters with remembrances

In total within four years from the moment of creation of the Special Commission on December, 22nd 2006, to Mejlis of the Crimean-Tatar people were sent about 610 letters from the Crimean Tatars in which they told about deportation of 1944.

According to E.Chubarov, the biggest part of these remembrances is published in three volumes of the book "Deportation. As it was." The last of 150 memoirs which arrived addressed to the Commission in 2006-2007, still wait for their edition.

To this group were added 60 memoirs of compatriots and ten official documents collected by the member of the committee, Gulnara Bekirova.

The action

Up to now the Commission carries out active work on archive replenishment by a new document file. For this purpose, in the autumn of this year in Crimea was declared the action "Unutma" on gathering of certificates of deportation of 1944 which, in the subsequent, was declared as termless.

For three months of the action the Crimean Tatars sent to the Commission about 120 statements addressed to the Chairman of the Council of Representatives of the Crimean-Tatar people at the President of Ukraine, the People's Deputy M. Dzhemilev.

In particular, in statements, according to E.Chubarov, contains request to realize a complex of actions for recognition of genocide of the Crimean-Tatar people by the Ukrainian state and the world community, and also to initiate before the Ukrainian state taking of measures on bringing to account of the persons who committed the given crime. Moreover, the detailed certificate on deportation where every witness describes those sad events, the hardest and tragic tests through which he and his family gone is applied on each statement. Witnesses also attach to the statement and the certificate copies of various documents, including the photos, confirming the facts mentioned by them.

"Such a format of gathering of documents from compatriots assumes presence of minimum, but sufficient package of documents proving commission of crime concerning concrete people", E.Chubarov emphasized.
