Expert opinion of the presidential commission to lay criminal information on the 1944 Deportation.
The Ukrainian President’s commission to the Ukraine’s Secret Service Chief and Prosecutor General is indisputably very positive decision, at the first place, as a moral recognition of the Crimean Tatar people’s tragedy in 1944 as genocide act by the Ukrainian state. Such opinion was expressed for QHA by well-known Ukrainian political scientist and MP Oles Donii.
At the same time, according to him, it is a great pity given commission has appeared only in 18th year of the Ukrainian independency, half a year before presidential campaign.
'Given decision should have adopted and could have adopted if not during the rulings of Kravchuk and Kuchma (former Ukrainian presidents – Ed.) that even if during the first year of the Victor Yushchenko’s presidentship' – political scientist stressed.
As O. Donii noted, unfortunately, true, concrete executors and initiators are dead and just the Deportation act could be condemned now.
According to him, the Ukrainian state must be built in compliance with ideas of democracy and tolerance towards all ethic groups that living on its territory and it also must recognize their tragic events. 'However, we have no such recognition' – O. Donii stated.
At the same time, Crimean political scientist Andrii Nikiforov thinks an institution of prosecution on the Deportation of the Crimean Tatar people and representatives of other ethnic groups will influence to life of repatriates nowise.
According to him, a criminal case can only 'clear up some questions associated with the Deportation and put an end to speculations of people who trying to collect dividends of peoples’ tragedy.
