A missile hit Donetsk Cathedral Mosque “Akhat’-Jami” during the shelling on August 16. It broke through the central dome and exploded inside the building. Fortunately, the prayer hall was empty at that moment, so there were no injuries.

Mufti of Religious Administration of Muslims of Ukraine “Umma” Mr.Said Ismagilov, who stays with his family in Donetsk, posted a status on his facebook page: “Donetsk Cathedral mosque got a hole in its dome. As it’s solid cast, I think the whole dome is to be replaced now. Though, this is for the specialists to decide after the war is over. It’s good that the dome didn’t collapse and it’s good they didn’t hit a minaret, as it would break both the dome and the walls while falling.”

This sad occasion, however, demonstrated unity of the Ukrainian society and their eagerness to help one another. The Mufti's status was spread over the social media, and many people regardless of their faith volunteered to help the Muslims restore their place of worship after the war is over.
