Move of Crimean Tatar to Roman alphabet is essential for whole Crimean Tatar people, academics say

Urgent moving of the Crimean Tatar language to the Roman alphabet would be as a real act that unites all the Crimean Tatars scattered in the world.

The Crimean Tatar academics support unanimously a necessity to introduce into operation “The Code of rules of orthography of the Crimean Tatar literary language on base of the Roman alphabet” at earliest possible date and to realize other organizing steps to move to Latin, including publishing of specialized dictionaries on the Code’s base.

As the press service of the Majlis of Crimean Tatar people informed QHA today, there was broadened conference on theoretical and practical issues of the Crimean Tatar script’s return from Cyrillic alphabet to Roman one in the conference hall of the Crimean Engineering and Pedagogical University (CEPU) by initiative of the Coordination council of the World Congress of the Crimean Tatars (WCCT) and the Crimean Tatar and Turkish linguistics department of CEPU on February 8 in Aqmescit (Simferopil).


The Chairman of the Majlis of Crimean Tatar people, MP Mustafa Djemilev, his first deputy Refat Chubarov, CEPU Chancellor Prof. Dr. Fevzi Yaqub, Prof. Dr. Adile Emir, Prof. Dr. İsmail Kerim, head of the Crimean Tatar and Turkish linguistics department of CEPU Dr. Emine Gani, leading lecturers of CEPU Dr. Nariman Seityagya, Milara Settar, dean of the Crimean Tatar and Turkish philology faculty Dr. Enise Habibullah, head of the Crimean Tatar literature department of the Tavriya National University Shevket Yunus as well as member of the WCCT Coordination council Ayshe Seitmuratova, the Chairman of the Crimean Tatar Writers Union Riza Fazıl, writer and poet Ablaziz Veli participated in the meeting. Furthermore, organizers invited Dr. Eden Mamut, the Secretary General of the Black Sea University Network, Professor of the Ovidius University (Constanta, Romania).


In particular, there was a presentation of “The Code of rules of orthography of the Crimean Tatar literary language on base of the Roman alphabet” that was compiled by scientists-philologists of CEPU in close collaboration with linguists of other universities. All participators expressed unanimously their support for introduction of “The Code of rules of orthography of the Crimean Tatar literary language on base of the Roman alphabet” as soon as possible.


In turn, Dr. E. Mamut stressed urgent moving of the Crimean Tatar language to the Roman alphabet would be as a real act that unites all the Crimean Tatars scattered in the world.


Summarizing up all suggestions told by participators, the WCCT President Refat Chubarov defined the concreted tasks for next several months. After fulfillment of these tasks, all scientific and practical measures for moving of the Crimean Tatar script to Latin will be put into operation.


Participators elected the working group that would generalize all proposals and remarks told at the meeting concerning “The Code of rules of orthography of the Crimean Tatar literary language on base of the Roman alphabet” and prepare a programme of its implementation. Prof. Dr. Adile Emir will head this group, and Dr. Emine Gani will be as its coordinator.
